Arsenal goalkeeper Okonkwo admits he was sceptical about move to Wrexham at first
Published: May 10, 2024
Arsenal goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo has revealed that he had initial doubts about joining Wrexham, despite the club's promotion from the National League.
The former England youth international, who has attracted interest from several Championship and European clubs, opened up about his reservations in the third episode of season three of Welcome to Wrexham.
The shot-stopper, who has kept 14 clean sheets in 36 appearances and was named in the League Two Team of the Season, admitted that he was "not too sure" about the move at first.
However, after speaking with manager Phil Parkinson and the goalie coach, Okonkwo felt convinced that it was the right move for him.
When asked about his move to Wales after formerly featuring for Sturm Graz and Crewe Alexandra on loan, Okonkwo revealed: "Wrexham called and when they first arrived I was like... 'I'm not too sure'.
"I know they came from the National League and they had huge exposure. I said 'look, let me speak to the manager, let me speak to the goalie coach'. I'll always make my moves with how I feel and when Phil spoke to me I knew, yeah, this is the right move for me."
The Red Dragons, who are keen to sign Okonkwo permanently from Arsenal, may use his successful loan spell as a blueprint for future transfer business.
The club's owners, Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, could explore the Premier League market for talented youngsters on loan, which could prove to be a cost-effective and shrewd move.
With the goalkeeper's future uncertain, it remains to be seen if the Welsh club can secure his services permanently and build on their promotion to League Two.
