Bayer Leverkusen striker Victor Boniface targets Nigerian record on the final day of Bundesliga season
Published: May 13, 2024
Super Eagles attacker Victor Boniface is targeting a Nigerian record on Saturday, May 18 when Bayer Leverkusen face off with Augsburg on the final day of the 2023-2024 Bundesliga season, allnigeriasoccer.com reports.
It was business as usual on Sunday as Bayer Leverkusen thrashed VfL Bochum 5-0 to take their unbeaten run to fifty games in all competitions since the start of the season.
Boniface, who scored from the spot on matchday 32, made it two in as many games when he converted a penalty won by international teammate Nathan Tella in the second minute of first half stoppage time.
In doing so, the Real Sapphire academy product took his tally in the Bundesliga to thirteen goals.
Taiwo Awoniyi holds the record for the most goals scored by a Nigerian player in a single season in the Bundesliga, netting fifteen goals over the course of the 2021-2022 campaign for Union Berlin
The 2013 Fifa U17 World Cup winner broke Jonathan Akpoborie's Nigerian record that stood for twenty-five years after scoring a brace in Union Berlin's 3-2 win versus VfL Bochum in his last Bundesliga match, on May 14, 2022..
Boniface needs to score two goals against Augsburg to equal Awoniyi's record, which is not a tough ask, given that he has netted braces against three different teams in the Bundesliga this season.
The former Royale Union Saint-Gilloise man will set a record for most goals scored by a Nigerian player in a single season in the Bundesliga if he scores a hat-trick.
Boniface made waves in his first season in the Bundesliga and has been named in the league's Team of the Season.
