Cyriel Dessers' 22nd goal of the season helps Rangers delay Celtic's title party
Published: May 14, 2024After the disappointment of losing to Celtic in the Old Firm derby, Rangers survived a scare against Dundee FC on Tuesday night, coming from two goals down to secure a 5-2 win in the penultimate round of matches in the Scottish Premiership.
Rangers have delayed Celtic's title party with the win but Brendan Rodgers's side will win the league on Wednesday if they avoid defeat to Kilmarnock at Rugby Park.
Leon Balogun, who is out of contract in the summer, has probably played his last game for the Light Blues this season as he was omitted from the matchday squad due to fitness issues, while Cyriel Dessers was named in the starting lineup for the 39th time in all competitions.
The deadlock was broken by Jordan McGhee who confidently slotted home at the back post after a delivery from Owen Dodgson, before Antonio Portales doubled the advantage five minutes before halftime.
In the 45th minute, Rangers pulled one back through Ross McCausland, who finished from a narrow angle.
Six minutes after the interval, Dessers brought Rangers back on level terms with a powerful header past the Dundee goalkeeper.
A brace by super-sub Scott Wright and an additional tally from Todd Cantwell earned the Light Blues a comfortable win at the end.
Dessers has now scored 22 goals in all competitions in a Rangers shirt, comprising sixteen in the Scottish Premiership, three in the Scottish FA Cup and one apiece in the Europa League, Champions League qualifiers and League Cup.
On the final day of the season, the Nigerian and his Rangers teammates will face Hearts.
