Invincibles: Victor Boniface on target as Bayer Leverkusen match Arsenal and Juventus feat
Published: May 18, 2024Bayer Leverkusen secured their place in football history by becoming the first team to complete a Bundesliga season unbeaten, thanks to a 2-1 victory over Augsburg at the BayArena on the final day of the campaign on Saturday evening, allnigeriasoccer.com reports.
The Werkself are the third team among big-five European Leagues clubs to go unbeaten in a full season, after Arsenal who first achieved the feat in 2003-2004 and Juventus who did not lose a single game in the 2011-2012 season.
Victor Boniface aimed to set a new record as the highest-scoring Nigerian player in a single Bundesliga season going into the fixture, but he fell short of breaking Taiwo Awoniyi's record of 15 goals, achieved in his final season at Union Berlin.
The Bayer Leverkusen number 22 scored arguably the easiest goal of his career in the 12th minute, tapping the ball into an unguarded net after a mistake by goalkeeper Tomáš Koubek.
And in doing so, Boniface took his tally for the season to twenty-one goals in all competitions, including fourteen in the Bundesliga.
The Bundesliga Rookie of the Season had a chance to increase the lead in the 16th minute but could not connect cleanly with his shot.
Robert Andrich, with a cheeky backheel, scored in the 27th minute to double the advantage for the Bundesliga champions.
The visitors pulled a goal back when Mert Kömür slotted into the top corner from just inside the box at minute 62.
Bayer Leverkusen have two cup finals before the end of the season, starting in Dubin in the Europa League showpiece against Ademola Lookman's Atalanta on Wednesday, May 22 before facing Kaiserslautern in the DFB Pokal final three days later.
