2024 U17 Euro: Arsenal's free-scoring striker Obi-Martin on target for Denmark in win against Wales
Published: May 20, 2024
Denmark are off to a winning start in Group B of the 2024 European U17 Championship after a goal either side of halftime earned the Scandinavian nation a 2-0 victory over Wales at the Dasaki Stadium, Achna on Monday.
Arsenal youth team striker Chido Obi-Martin headed into the U17 Euro - his first major tournament for Denmark - in good form, having netted in nine consecutive matches in the U18 Premier League to take his tally for the 2023-2024 season to 32 goals from eighteen appearances.
The 16-year-old broke Folarin Balogun's record for the most goals scored by an Arsenal player in a single season in the U18 Premier League, whilst still a schoolboy.
Just as it seemed both teams were going into the halftime break at 0-0, Obi-Martin broke the deadlock in the second minute of stoppage time when he rounded the Wales goalkeeper and slotted into the net after a through ball from Noah Markmann,
Less than three minutes into the second half, the Danes doubled their advantage through Sofus Johannesen, who headed home after pouncing on a clearance.
Obi-Martin has now scored eleven goals in fifteen appearances for Denmark's U17 national team since making his debut for the age group against Norway in August 2023.
The former FC Copenhagen youth teamer is aiming to become the third player of Nigerian descent to win the Golden Boot at the European U17 Championship, after Victor Moses and Dominic Solanke who were the top scorers of the tournament in 2007 and 2014 respectively.
