Versatile Celtic defender eligible for Super Eagles invited to train with Ireland senor national team
Published: May 29, 2024
Former Manchester United star John O'Shea has extended an invitation to versatile Celtic defender of Nigerian descent Bosun Lawal to train with the Republic of Ireland senior national team, the Football Association of Ireland has informed vis social media.
The 20-year-old Lawal, who recently concluded a successful loan spell at Fleetwood Town FC in England's League One, caught the eye of O'Shea with his performances in England.
Lawal will train with the senior national team ahead of the friendly games against Hungary and Portugal in June.
Making 42 appearances for Fleetwood Town, Lawal found the net six times and provided two assists.
However, with Fleetwood's relegation to League Two, he's set to return to Celtic and vie for a spot in Brendan Rodgers' squad.
Joining Lawal in O'Shea's 26-man squad are his Celtic compatriots Liam Scales, Mikey Johnston, and Adam Idah.
Following the friendlies against Hungary and Portugal in June, Lawal will revert to the U21 setup for further fixtures against Croatia and England.
Despite being born in Ireland, Lawal has yet to earn a senior cap but has represented the nation at various youth levels.
The invitation to train with the senior squad presents Lawal with a golden opportunity to impress the management and stake a claim for future call-ups.
