Percy Tau, Mokoena named in Bafana Bafana's final 23-man squad for WCQs against Nigeria, Zimbabwe
Published: May 30, 2024
Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has announced his final squad for the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifying matches against Nigeria and Zimbabwe.
Bafana Bafana will face the Super Eagles in Uyo on Friday, June 7, 2024 and then return to host Zimbabwe at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein on Tuesday, June 11, 2024.
An analysis of the 23-man roster revealed that three goalkeepers, eight defenders, four midfielders and eight forwards will be on the plane to Uyo in the coming days.
The squad is headlined by reigning African Inter-Club Player of the Year, Percy Tau, who is widely acknowledged to be the poster boy of South African football.
Tau has faced the Super Eagles four times in the past, most recently at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, and has been involved in three goals (1 goal, 2 assists).
Teboho Mokoena, midfielder who plies his trade with African giants Mamelodi Sundowns, will be part of Broos' group for the World Cup qualifiers.
Burnley forward Lyle Foster has returned to the fold after missing the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and the internationals in March 2024.
South Africa are currently second in Group C of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers with three points, one more than Nigeria who drew their opening two matches.
