'He should be fearful' - Finidi insists Gernot Rohr's knowledge of Super Eagles players counts for nothing
Published: June 08, 2024
The Super Eagles have another opportunity to turn things around on Monday when they face a coach that knows all about the Nigerian national team very well.
Republic of Benin manager Gernot Rohr knows majority of the players in the current Super Eagles squad, having handed debuts to Semi Ajayi, Paul Onuachu, Samuel Chukwueze, Terem Moffi, Frank Onyeka, Chidozie Awaziem and Maduka Okoye during his time as Nigeria boss.
The former Bayern Munich defender took key players Wilfred Ndidi, Kelechi Iheanacho and Alex Iwobi to the 2018 World Cup in Russia, and also had Ademola Lookman on his radar before he was relieved of his duties.
Finidi George has insisted that Rohr's knowledge of the Nigerian national will count for nothing in Monday's meeting at the
Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny in Abidjan.
Speaking to reporters at the post-match press conference after his side's 1-1 draw against South Africa, Finidi said: "That doesn't change anything. If he knows the players, doesn't know the players, it's Benin, the players that he had before they are still around, that means he should be fearful.
"If he knows the players so well and he has coached them, he should know they are a bunch of good players that we have in the national team.
"I've always said it I want to see attractive football and you must risk if you want to win, you can't just sit back and feel the goals will come, you have to enforce it which we did in the second half but unfortunately it didn't happen.
"We'll go to Ivory Coast and see how we can win that game."
After six draws and three narrow losses to Mozambique, South Africa and Senegal, Rohr finally won his first game in charge of Benin on Thursday as the Cheetahs beat Rwanda 1-0 on matchday three of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
