Finidi reveals how Super Eagles will approach World Cup qualifier against Gernot Rohr's Cheetahs
Published: June 10, 2024
Finidi George has made it clear that the Super Eagles will approach the crucial 2026 World Cup qualifier against Gernot Rohr's Cheetahs very seriously.
The Super Eagles find themselves in fifth place in Group C of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers after playing three consecutive draws, including two at home.
The three-time African champions had to come behind to secure draws in each of those games, thanks to second half goals from Semi Ajayi, Kelechi Iheanacho and Fisayo Dele--Bashiru.
After three matchdays, Group C remains wide open, with just three points separating the top team Lesotho from the bottom team Zimbabwe.
Gernot Rohr and his players would be terrified of another game with Nigeria, considering the Cheetahs have yet to win a match against the Super Eagles in fourteen attempts, with twelve losses and two draws in their previous encounters.
When asked what he will be doing differently from the game against South Africa, Finidi said at the pre-match press conference: "We are going to approach the game with every seriousness.
"The match against South Arica is gone. We have learned from it, we just have to see how we can get ourselves to have that fantastic second half that we had.
"If we can start that way, tomorrow I think we have a chance."
Kickoff for today's clash at the Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny in Abidjan is 1700 hours Nigerian time.
