'We cannot throw in the towel' - Finidi shifts blame to Super Eagles players after historic loss to Benin

Nigeria continued their poor form in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers with a surprising 2-1 loss to Gernot Rohr's Republic of Benin on Monday evening.

This marks the first time in their history that the Super Eagles have suffered a loss to their neighbors and the defeat came in the fifteenth game between both countries.

Club Brugge midfielder Raphael Onyedika put Nigeria ahead in the 27th minute when he gave himself a bit of space and delivered a brilliant shot that sailed into the net, but a goal apiece from Jodel Dossou and Steve Mounié secured a famous win for the Cheetahs.

The Super Eagles pushed for a leveler in the second half but could not fashion out any clear cut chances.

The defeat sees the Super Eagles remain fifth in the standings with three points, four less than surprise table-toppers Benin.

Addressing the media shortly after the game at the Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny in Abidjan, Super Eagles coach Finidi George questioned the commitment of the players and noted that they did not give their best following the end of the 2023-2024 season.

Finidi told reporters: "It's to win but there's no special formula for that. We have to see how the players will start the new season and see how we can get the best out of the players.

"Everybody must be committed, with that commitment we'll win games. I believe we're going to win games and if we can win games the battle will still be there.

"We cannot throw in the towel because we have had only three points. We have to find a way to get these players back in a way for them to perform."

The Super Eagles don't return to World Cup qualifying action until March 2025 when they face Rwanda.
