'Doesn't seem logical' - Racing Genk chief rules out move for Southampton striker Onuachu
Published: June 13, 2024
Belgian Pro League club Racing Genk have opted against re-signing Super Eagles striker Paul Onuachu.
Speculation had been rife about Onuachu's potential return to Genk since his departure for Southampton in 2023, as he struggled to replicate his Belgian form in England.
Genk reportedly expressed interest in acquiring Onuachu's services during the previous campaign, but he ultimately opted to join Tranzonspor in Turkey.
During his time in Belgium, Onuachu made a significant impact, scoring 85 goals and providing 10 assists in 134 appearances.
However, his move to Southampton in January 2023 failed to yield the desired results, leading to a subsequent loan spell at Trabzonspor following the Saints relegation to the Championship.
On loan in Turkey, Onuachu rediscovered his form, netting 15 goals and contributing 4 assists in 21 league games. This resurgence sparked rumours of a potential return to Racing Genk.
Dimitri De Condé, Head of Football at Genk, addressed the speculation surrounding Onuachu's return in an interview with voetbal24.be, stating: "That doesn't seem logical for Genk financially."
Onuachu, whose contract with Southampton runs until 2026, is expected to return to the English club this summer following his loan spell in Turkey.
He recently featured in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, starting in the match against South Africa.
