Confirmed: Third-highest scoring Nigerian in German Bundesliga history joins Botev Plovdiv
Published: June 20, 2024With a statement on their official website, Bulgarian First League club Botev Plovdiv have announced the signing of Nigeria international Anthony Ujah.
Ujah has left German football with a glittering curriculum vitae, having appeared in 136 matches in the Bundesliga for four different clubs, namley FSV Mainz, FC Cologne, Werder Bremen and Union Berlin.
With 30 goals to his name, the Warri Wolves product is the third-highest scoring Nigerian player in German Bundesliga history, behind Jonathan Akpoborie (60) and Victor Agali (32).
Except for an eighteen-month stint in China with Liaoning Whowin, Ujah has played for German clubs over the past thirteen years.
On the international stage, the Ugbokolo native was a member of the Super Eagles squad to the 2013 Confederations Cup in Brazil, where he started Nigeria's 6-1 rout of Tahiti.
Commenting on the capture of Ujah, Botev’s sporting director Artur Platek said: "We are delighted to welcome Anthony Uja to Botev (Plovdiv). He brings with him a wealth of experience from the top levels of German football, boasting matches in both the Bundesliga and Second Bundesliga on his calling card.
"His proven football qualities and his ability to score will certainly help us to improve."
Ujah last wore the colours of Eintracht Braunschweig, scoring 14 goals in 54 matches for the club.
The experienced striker links up with Ehije Ukaki, Samuel Akere and Emmanuel Umeh at Botev Plovdiv.
