Opposition watch: Spain include Arsenal, Man Utd, Barcelona, Real Madrid stars in provisional squad for Olympics
Published: June 26, 2024
Montse Tomé, the coach of the Spain Women's national team, has announced a roster of 26 players for their 2025 European Championship qualifiers versus Czech Republic and Belgium, plus Olympic Games preparation.
Of the twenty-six players named to the squad list, eighteen will be on the plane to France for the Olympic Games next month.
World champions Spain have been drawn in Group C of the tournament, where they will face Japan, Brazil and Nigeria.
Spain will do battle with African powerhouse Nigeria at the Stade de la Beaujoire, Nantes on July 28, sandwiched in-between matches against Japan (July 25) and Brazil (July 31).
Ten different clubs have contributed players to the roster, with European champions Barcelona having ten players listed, including cap-tied striker of Nigerian descent Vicky Lopez.
The 17-year-old Lopez is not eligible to represent the Super Falcons after making her fourth appearance for the 2023 Fifa Women's World Cup winners against Denmark in a 2025 UEFA Women's Championship qualifier last month.
Arsenal centre-back Laia Codina Panedas is in contention to feature in her first Olympic Games, having made the provisional squad list along with Manchester City duo Laia Aleixandri López and Leila Ouahabi Elouahabi, and Manchester United's Lucía García Córdoba.
The training camp will start on June 30 and continue until July 17, after which the final training camp for the Paris Games will start.
