VfB Stuttgart join Crystal Palace, Leeds United, 2 others in race for Super Eagles CB
Published: July 05, 2024
VfB Stuttgart are the latest club linked with a summer move for Super Eagles central defender Jordan Torunarigha.
The former Hertha Berlin player moved to Gent in January 2022, initially signing on loan before sealing a permanent transfer at the end fo the 2021-2022 season, and has established himself as a key player for the Belgian Pro League side.
In recent days, Serie A side Torino, English duo Crystal Palace and Leeds United, and Bundesliga club Hoffenheim were credited with an interest in the Nigerian international.
There is now a new suitor in the form of VfB Stuttgart, according to Sky Sport Germany transfer market specialist Florian Plettenberg, who has reported that The Swabians have held initial talks with Gent over the signing of Torunarigha.
The report added that the Nigerian is keen on a move to VfB Stuttgart, who are competing in the group stage of the 2024-2025 UEFA Champions League, thanks to their second place finish in last season's Bundesliga.
VfB Stuttgart are in the market for a defender due to the imminent departures of Waldemar Anton and Hiroki Ito.
It has been suggested that Torunarigha is prioritising a move to VfB Stuttgart despite interest from Crystal Palace, Leeds United, Hoffenheim and Torino.
It would cost at least three million euros to sign Torunarigha, who has entered the final year of his contract at Gent.
In the January transfer window, VfB Stuttgart wanted to acquire Torunarigha after Dan-Axel Zagadou tore his cruciate ligament, but their last-minute request on transfer deadline day was too late for Gent to sign a replacement.
