Why Awoniyi missed Nottingham Forest pre-season game against Chesterfield; Aina, Dennis feature
Published: July 13, 2024
Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi missed Nottingham Forest's 3-0 victory over Chesterfield in a pre-season game played at the SMH Group Stadium on Saturday.
A goal apiece from Chris Wood, Josh Bowler and Ibrahim Sangaré gave Nuno Espírito Santo's side triumph over the League Two outfit.
As reported by NottinghamshireLive, Awoniyi missed the game against Chesterfield due to personal reasons and not due to injury.
The striker had earlier picked up a slight knock during the first week of his arrival for pre-season but has shaken it off and is back fit.
He is expected to join the rest of the Forest squad for their training camp in Spain next week as they continue preparation for the new season.
Awoniyi struggled with his fitness last season, featuring in just 20 Premier League games, seven shy of the previous season and didn't start any fixture in the last two months of the 2023-2024 campaign.
The 26-year-old must return to full fitness in the new season so as to protect his position in the Nottingham Forest's team.
Super Eagles right back Ola Aina featured in the Reds' victory over Chesterfield with his low cross leading to Bowler's goal while Emmanuel Dennis also played the first half of the game.
