Confirmed: Competition for Okonkwo as Arsenal sign talented goalkeeper from Ajax Amsterdam
Published: July 21, 2024
Arsenal have signed a new goalkeeper to provide some competition for the development squad shot-stoppers, including Brian Okonkwo, in the forthcoming season.
Through their official website, the English Premier League side have confirmed the signing of Tommy Setford, who has joined from Ajax Amsterdam, subject to the completion of regulatory processes.
Born in the Netherlands, Setford was teammates with Hale End Academy graduate Ethan Nwaneri and Manchester City forward Justin Oboavwoduo in the Young Lions squad during last year's Fifa U17 World Cup.
Setford will initially start his Arsenal career with the U21 team and train regularly with the first team goalkeeping group.
The Gunners have signed two talented goalkeepers in the summer transfer window following the departures of Hubert Graczyk, James Hillson, and Nigerian duo Ovie Ejeheri and Arthur Okonkwo in the off-season.
Brian Okonkwo has taken part in Arsenal U21s first two pre-season fixtures, coming off the bench in the 4-2 win against Boreham Wood before starting their most recent friendly with Enfield Town.
The Nigerian youngster debuted for Arsenal U21s in the Premier League 2 last season and also played for the youth team in the U18 Premier League.
Brian Okonkwo signed his first professional contract with Arsenal this month and has been promoted to the U21 squad on a full-time basis ahead of the 2024-2025 campaign.
