'There had been a very high offer' - Napoli chief admits club's mistake in not selling Osimhen last summer
Published: July 27, 2024
Napoli director Mauro Moliso has admitted that the club were wrong not to have sold Victor Osimhen last summer.
Off the back of helping the Naples-based club end their 33-year wait for the Scudetto and being named the Serie A Best Striker, the Super Eagles forward was one of the hottest properties in the market.
He was heavily courted by Chelsea who had had a terrible season in front of goal but the Blues were priced out of a move and eventually resorted to signing Senegal international Nicolas Jackson.
Manchester United were also credited with an interest in him but found his price tag exuberant before the club settled for Rasmus Højlund.
There was also a huge offer from Al-Ahli which could have made the Nigerian forward the most expensive African player ever though it was the player that rejected a move to the Saudi Pro-League outfit.
Reminiscing on what happened last summer, Moliso stated that Napoli made a mistake by not disposing of the 25-year-old
"We made some mistakes in Osimhen's management. I arrived in Naples in mid-July and I knew that there had been a very high offer from one of the biggest teams in Europe. In hindsight, we are all good, but perhaps we could have sold him" he told Sportitalia via Corriere dello Sport
Napoli are finding it difficult to offload the Nigeria international as his €130m valuation is too prohibitive for European heavyweights.
PSG are still in the race for his signature but the Parthenopeans will have to reduce the star striker's price tag to make a deal happen.
