Spain 1 Nigeria 0: Five observations from Super Falcons' loss to La Roja despite strong defensive showing

Nigeria's hope of progressing to the quarterfinals of the 2024 Olympics is in jeopardy after a 1-0 defeat to Spain on Sunday evening courtesy of a a cross-shot goal from a free-kick by Alexia Putellas

With the defeat, Nigeria remain bottom of Group C with zero point, after losing their opening two games.

Allnigeriasoccer.com presents five observations from the loss to the reigning world champions.

Waldrum Makes Two Changes, Adopts Defensive and Counter, Approach

Super Falcons coach Randy Waldrum made adjustments to the team that faced Brazil, bringing in Asisat Oshoala and Esther Okoronkwo for Chinwendu Ihezuo and Jennifer Echegini.

This change saw Nigeria set up in a 4-4-2 formation, focusing on a defensive strategy and using counter attacks against the European champions.

The team remained compact in defense and looked to capitalize on opportunities to attack the world champions.

Oshoala Drought Continues Despite Return to Lineup

Randy Waldrum made two changes to the team that lost to Brazil in the first Olympic game, bringing in Asisat Oshoala and Esther Okoronkwo to strengthen the forward position.

Despite Oshoala's return, the Bay FC striker still faced difficulties during the match for Nigeria.

She received a yellow card for a foul in the first half, being the only player penalized by the referee.

The incident underscored her difficulties during the match, as the ex-Barcelona striker was unable to pose a threat to the Spanish defense despite having limited opportunities on the counterattack.

Oshoala has not scored for Nigeria since her last goal in the Olympic qualifier against Ethiopia on October 31, 2023.

Spain Dominate Possession But Struggle to Threaten Falcons Defence

Nigeria adopted a cautious strategy against the Spanish national team in order to advance to the quarterfinals.

With a loss in their first game against Brazil, another defeat against the European champions would result in Nigeria being eliminated from the tournament.

To secure a positive outcome, Waldrum chose a defensive system, allowing Spain to have more possession.

However, despite controlling the ball, Spain had difficulty breaking through the Falcons' defense, while Nigeria had limited chances on counterattacks.

In order to succeed in the tournament, the Spanish team will need to enhance their tactics against strong defensive opponents and be more effective in converting their opportunities.

Chiamaka Nnadozie Shines Again

Chiamaka Nnadozie, the Super Falcons goalkeeper, showcased her remarkable skills once more.

The Paris FC goalkeeper proved to be dependable, producing numerous vital saves to keep Nigeria competitive under the intense pressure from Spain.

Alexia Putellas Makes the Difference

Alexia Putellas, the Barcelona midfielder, proved to be decisive for the world champions against Nigeria.

Spain, despite their possession dominance, faced challenges in creating significant goal-scoring opportunities against the Nigerian defense.

Yet, Putellas turned the tide with a crucial free-kick goal just five minutes from the end of the match, securing Spain's spot in the quarterfinals.
