'It doesn't make sense' - Ex-Liverpool defender explains why Osimhen should not go on loan to Chelsea
Published: July 31, 2024
Former Liverpool defender Steve Nicol has revealed why he is against Napoli star forward Victor Osimhen moving to Chelsea on loan this summer.
As contained in David Ornstein's report yesterday, Chelsea and Napoli are in talks regarding the Super Eagles striker and it is being proposed that he move to the Blues on loan while Romelu Lukaku joins Napoli permanently.
This has since been denied by the striker's agent Roberto Calenda who has stated that the report is disrespectful to his client though he didn't deny that there is a discussion taking place between the Blues and the Parthenopeans regarding his client's future.
The Premier League outfit and their Serie A counterparts are trying to find a solution for their two wantaway strikers and that led to the report that he could move to west London on loan.
As a consequence of the back and forth, Fabrizio Romano has stated that Osimhen and agent will only accept a loan deal if it contains a mandatory option to buy clause which according to him signals a permanent transfer as opposed to loan with an option to buy.
Speaking about the subject on ESPN FC, Nicol stated that the Nigeria international shouldn't join Chelsea on loan and revealed the reason behind his position.
"I can't get my head around this – Osimhen signs a new deal to be nice to the club and then he goes on loan to Chelsea? It doesn't make a lot of sense from Osimhen's point of view.
"I mean do you know football is like things change very quickly. You know you go there on loan and all of a sudden you either get injured or you have a bad time and your whole world is turned upside down.
"I was shocked when I heard that this could be a loan. I guess it makes sense for both clubs if the money is right, but from his point of view I don't think I would be keen to go on loan if I am Osimhen. The guy is a proper player".
PSG are still considered to be in the race for the 25-year-old who has agreed to join the French giants but the deal will only go through if they manage to strike a deal with Napoli.
