Steve McClaren leaves Man Utd for new role as Jamaica coach amid links with Super Eagles job
Published: July 31, 2024
Steve McClaren has left Manchester United and has been appointed as the new head coach of the Jamaican national team amid speculation linking him with the vacant Super Eagles job.
It was claimed that the Red Devils assistant manager was one of the three foreign coaches shortlisted for the Super Eagles job, but he is no longer in the running for the position, with the Jamaica Football Federation (J.F.F) annoucing on Wednesday evening that McClaren is the new coach of the Reggae Boyz.
The Nigeria coaching job is now vacant following the resignation of Finidi George due to the Super Eagles' disappointing results in the June internationals against South Africa's Bafana Bafana and the Republic of Benin's Cheetahs.
Before Finidi stepped down, the Nigeria Football Federation had stated that a foreign coach would be appointed for the Super Eagles ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Former Nigeria international Yakubu Aiyegbeni worked with Steve McClaren at Middlesbrough during the 2005-2006 season, while current Super Eagles right-back Bright Osayi-Samuel played under him at Queens Park Rangers in the 2018-2019 campaign.
McClaren's last managerial role was at Queens Park Rangers five years ago and he has also coached Twente, VfL Wolfsburg, Nottingham Forest, Derby County, Newcastle United as well as England's national team.
The Super Eagles are back in action in September 2024 when they face Republic of Benin and Rwanda in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
