USA Tour 2024: Red-hot winger Madueke scores again but Chelsea lose to PL champions Man City
Published: August 04, 2024Noni Madueke continued his rich vein of form with another goal as Chelsea suffered a 4-2 defeat to Premier League champions Manchester City in their fourth game of the USA Tour 2024.
Blues boss Enzo Maresca named a back four consisting of captain Reece James, Tosin Adarabioyo, Levi Colwill and Malo Gusto.
With Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo returning to pre-season training, it meant Lesley Ugochukwu was named among the substitutes alongside Carney Chukwuemeka, Noni Madueke and Tyrique George.
Erling Haaland squeezed the ball in to open the scoring from the spot in the fourth minute and the Norwegian doubled the advantage with a lovely shot on his weaker right foot a minute later.
Ten minutes into the second half, Oscar Bobb made it 3-0 before Haaland grabbed his hat-trick in the 56th minute after Chelsea gave the ball away in the middle of the pitch.
Raheem Sterling slammed the ball home against his former club to pull one back just before the hour mark after a beautiful pass from Madueke, who entered the game as a substitute in the 46th minute, replacing Mykhailo Mudryk.
The England U21 international of Nigerian descent added a second for Chelsea with one minute left on the clock with a nicely taken goal after he was released by Romeo Lavia.
Ugochukwu replaced Dewsbury-Hall at minute 79, while George and Chukwuemeka were non-playing substitutes.
Chelsea will bring their USA Tour 2024 to a close with a game against Real Madrid at Charlotte's Bank of America Stadium on Tuesday.
