'Money is not there' - Ex-Man Utd midfielder suggests Rangers cannot afford Dessers upgrade
Published: August 04, 2024
Former Manchester United midfielder Michael Stewart has had his say on Rangers' wherewithal to sign an upgrade on Super Eagles forward Cyriel Dessers.
The 29-year-old didn't impress a lot in his first season at Ibrox and the Light Blues are reportedly in search of an upgrade as they seek to end Celtic's dominance in the Scottish Premiership.
They have been linked with Plymouth Argyle striker Morgan Whittaker, Tyrese Campbell who is the son of former Arsenal defender Kevin Campbell, as well as Hearts' striker Lawrence Shankland.
They haven't made any progress regarding any of the aforementioned targets but have signed Moroccan striker Hamza Igamane who isn't considered as someone who could rival Dessers or serve as an upgrade.
Thus, the reason behind their continued search for another central forward but there is a fear of whether the 55-time Scottish champions can still afford one due to their expenses in the current transfer window.
Speaking on BBC Sportscene via Ibrox News, Stewart had his say on whether Rangers can sign another striker who could rival Dessers in the current transfer window.
"It's a good question, are Rangers fans surprised? I would say probably not because I think there's a realisation that money's not there to go and find somebody else," he said.
"For Philippe Clement, he's going to have to be imaginative in the transfer market and they've got no margin for error, if they bring somebody else in they really have to hit the ground running straight away."
Dessers started the Scottish Premiership opener against Hearts yesterday and drew blanks despite coming close to scoring on some occasions in the encounter.
He has now failed to score in the two season-opening games that he has played in the Scottish top-flight, having failed to find the net when he made his debut against Kilmarnock last season.
