'Are we sure it's worth it?' - Ex-sporting director insists Napoli better with Osimhen and without Lukaku
Published: August 07, 2024
Former Italian sporting director Enrico Fedele is against the idea of Napoli signing Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku as a replacement for Victor Osimhen, arguing that the Parthenopeans are stronger with the Nigerian in the squad.
The reigning African Footballer of the Year extended his contract with Napoli last December with a release clause of 130 million euros inserted into the agreement, but at the same time, there's a gentleman's agreement in place that would allow him leave the Diego Maradona Stadium this summer if the clause is activated.
Napoli are in talks with Chelsea over the permanent acquisition of Lukaku, with Osimhen moving in the opposite direction on a temporary basis.
It is clear that both clubs are in agreement on Lukaku moving to Napoli permanently, but there is uncertainty regarding how to strike a deal for Osimhen to move to Chelsea as the striker and his camp are opposed to a loan plus an option to buy deal.
Fedele has suggested that it would be a good idea to take Osimhen off the market, taking into account the net receipts from the proposed deals involving the Nigerian and Belgian center forwards.
"Assuming you earn 90 million from this sale, you would spend 35 for Lukaku's registration and 30 for the Belgian's salary: are we sure it's worth it? Napoli, with Osimhen, is a completely different team," he said on Radio Marte via Area Napoli.
"To get into the Champions League, a strong midfielder is needed, even better if Osimhen is confirmed as a centre forward leading Napoli's attack.
"With Victor on the pitch, Napoli increases its offensive strength by 50% and becomes a serious candidate for the top positions".
Osimhen did not take part in the five games played by Napoli in pre-season as he's still expected to depart the club before the transfer window closes for business.
