Chelsea beat Bayer Leverkusen, other clubs in race for Spanish-born Nigerian striker

Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Chelsea have agreed a deal with Atletico Madrid for the signing of Spanish-born Nigerian striker Samu Omorodion, beating Bayer Leverkusen and other competitors in the process.

The deal had been in place before now, but its completion was reliant on Julian Alvarez moving to Atletico Madrid and with that done, that has paved the way for Omorodion to join the Blues.

The two-time European champions will pay £35m for the signature of the 20-year-old and have agreed to give him a seven-year contract.

Atletico Madrid were initially reluctant to dispose of the talented striker just after a year of getting him on their books but with the arrival of Alvarez and Alexander Sørloth, there was no need to keep him any longer in the squad.

Omorodion is set to become Chelsea's eighth summer signing of the current transfer window and the second Nigerian to be snapped up by the Premier League giants, with Tosin Adarabioyo who arrived as a free agent from Fulham being the first.

The Spain-born forward has his work cut out already due the competition for places in Enzo Maresca's squad and with his participation at the ongoing Paris 2024 Olympics, the task of breaking into the starting lineup couldn't have been harder.

He will compete with former Barcelona starlet Marc Guiu, Nicolas Jackson for a place in the first XI and there is also the possibility of Chelsea signing one more striker which could be Super Eagles forward Victor Osimhen.
