Watford icon suggests Solanke should join Arsenal instead of Tottenham Hotspur
Published: August 08, 2024Watford legend Troy Deeney has cautioned Tottenham Hotspur against signing Bournemouth forward Dominic Solanke, suggesting that the player would be a better fit for Arsenal instead.
Solanke, who had an impressive 2023/2024 season with Bournemouth, scoring 19 goals and providing 3 assists in 38 league games, has been linked with a move to Tottenham as the club searches for a replacement for Harry Kane.
Kane's departure and Richarlison's struggles in the previous campaign have intensified Spurs' need for a reliable striker.
However, Deeney believes Solanke might not be the ideal choice for Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou's system.
During an appearance on talkSPORT, Deeney recommended that Tottenham consider Brentford's Ivan Toney as a more suitable option.
"I think Solanke works better at somewhere like Arsenal where he has to be on the end of something,” Deeney said during an appearance on talkSPORT.
"If you’re going to spend £65million which is the reported fee, I would expect them [Tottenham] to go for Toney, if they can get him.
"Test the water with Brentford and leave the offer on the table for a week.”
Deeney acknowledged Solanke’s talent but expressed doubts about his ability to be a decisive presence in front of goal.
"Dominic is good. He’s someone who has learned the hard way in terms of being at Liverpool then coming away.
"But whenever I watch Dominic and I think he’s a good player, I still don’t see the killer in him. I know he’s scored a lot of goals, but I don’t go, ‘it’s everything for him to score a goal."
