'Ajax need money' - Ronald de Boer explains why Eredivisie giants are open to the sale of Akpom
Published: August 09, 2024
Ajax Amsterdam legend Ronald de Boer says he understands why the Eredivisie giants would be keen to move on Chuba Akpom before the close of the summer transfer window.
The Super Eagles hopeful attracted concrete interest from Nottingham Forest in the January transfer window, only for Ajax Amsterdam to block his potential return to England because they could not sign a replacement at short notice.
Akpom is angling for a move away from the Johan Cruijff ArenA due to a lack of adequate playing opportunities in his first season at Ajax.
The Hale End Academy graduate made only eleven starts from a possible 43 in all competitions last season, logging 1,519 minutes.
Statistically speaking, the 2022-2023 Championship Golden Boot winner demonstrated he has not lost his goalscoring touch after bagging 15 goals in 36 matches.
Akpom has started each of the three matches played by Ajax in the new season only because first choice striker Brian Brobbey missed a large chunk of pre-season preparations due to his involvement with the Netherlands squad at the 2024 European Championship.
"Ajax will look at the possibilities if he is wanted, because Ajax needs money. I think Akpom is on the list (to leave, ed.)," Ronald de Boer was quoted as saying by Voetbal Primeur.
Ajax have not done any major transfer business in the ongoing window apart from the acquisition of Bertrand Traoré, whom they signed on a free transfer, and require funds to invest in new players to strengthen their squad.
