After Serie A debut, Lazio coach tells Dele-Bashiru he needs to improve in two key areas
Published: August 19, 2024
Following Lazio's convincing 3-1 victory over Venezia on Sunday night, coach Marco Baroni has provided feedback to Super Eagles midfielder Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, focusing on areas for development despite an impressive debut performance.
Dele-Bashiru, who made his Serie A debut at the Stadio Olimpico, played the full 90 minutes as part of a midfield trio alongside Matteo Guendouzi and Nicolo Rovella.
The 23-year-old midfielder made a notable impact, completing 96% of his passes and executing two successful dribbles.
In the post-match press conference, Baroni praised Dele-Bashiru's potential but identified two key areas where improvement is needed.
Baroni pointed out that the midfielder must work on his positioning and ability to become a ball-winner for the team.
In quotes relayed by Lazionews24, Baroni told reporters: "Dele-Bashiru has great potential. He is a lad who must understand our football and to do so he must train and play.
"We will give him the opportunity to do so. We also have other good midfielders who are improving. The attitude was important."
Baroni continued, "He has to improve his posture, he is often closed by the opposition who doesn’t give him the chance to drive forward.
"But when he opens his shoulder, he is devastating. He has to become a ball-winner, but it’s not easy. It’s a complete upheaval, but he made an extraordinary contribution."
During the match, Dele-Bashiru attempted only two tackles and lost possession to the opposition eight times.
Despite these areas for improvement, his debut performance demonstrated promise and potential for further growth.
