'This one is extra good' - Genk coach delighted after red-hot Arokodare inspires win against Beerschot VA
Published: August 19, 2024
Racing Genk coach Thorsten Fink has expressed delight with his team's performance after a thrilling 4-3 victory over Beerschot VA at the Olympisch Stadion on Saturday.
Nigerian striker Tolu Arokodare played a key role, scoring twice to help secure the win—Genk's first victory at the stadium in 11 years.
Speaking to the club's media after the game, Fink described the win as an important moment for both the team and the traveling supporters.
He acknowledged the poor start but commended his players for their resilience and ability to fight back.
"It's been 11 years since we last managed to win at Beerschot," Fink told Genk's official website.
"So this one is extra good. Also for the supporters who traveled with us. Everyone saw a good match from both teams today.
"In the beginning, we had a bad start, but we immediately believed in it and were able to respond with a few goals as a result.
The match, which Fink likened to a "Hitchcock movie," took a dramatic turn when defender Mujaid Sadick was sent off in the 76th minute.
Despite the setback, Genk held on for the win. Fink admitted there were defensive lapses but stressed that the next two weeks would be used to strengthen the team's defensive principles.
"In the second half, it looked like a Hitchcock movie, especially with that red card. Defensively we occasionally dropped the ball.
"We will use the next two weeks to further sharpen the defensive principles. But for football, this was good advertising."
Arokodare, who joined Genk in January 2023 from French club Amiens SC has been in brilliant form in the new season.
The 23-year-old has already scored four goals in four matches this campaign, following a successful 2023-2024 season in which he netted 15 goals and provided three assists in 52 appearances.
His performances have caught the eye and he will be hoping to secure a spot in the Super Eagles squad this season.
