'I don't know what will happen' - Atalanta coach comments on the future of Lookman amid PSG interest
Published: August 20, 2024
Speaking at the post-match press conference after his side's 4-0 rout of Lecce in their Serie A opener on Monday night, Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini has admitted that he cannot predict whether Ademola Lookman will be a player of the Bergamo club at the end of the transfer window.
Lookman and Teun Koopmeiners were not named in Atalanta's traveling squad to Lecce amid speculation surrounding their futures.
While the Nigeria international is attracting concrete interest from Paris Saint-Germain, the Dutchman is heavily linked with a move to Atalanta's Serie A rivals Juventus.
After the injury suffered by Gonçalo Ramos against Le Havre on Friday, PSG have identified Lookman, hero of Atalanta's Europa League triumph back in May, as a possible replacement and have started talks with Atalanta over a transfer.
It has been suggested that the Charlton Athletic academy product is pushing for a transfer to the French champions.
Atalanta are keen on one of their most important players staying at the club and it would take a massive offer to prise him away from the Nerazzurri.
Lookman's performance in the Europa League final has enhanced his reputation and it is not surprising he is being linked with a big-money move to one of Europe's elite clubs, PSG.
Commenting on the situation of Lookman and Koopmeiners, Gasperini was quoted as saying by Tuttosport: "I have been given the right guarantees.
"Nobody expected this situation, which is why I am currently sailing by sight. I don't know what will happen, but my job is to assemble as much as possible together with the club.
"It is clear that we will actually have the definition of the squad on August 31st.
"We have an undoubtedly solid team structure, from defense to midfield, with players who have been at Atalanta for years, guaranteeing a quality of play that is always competitive".
Since landing at Atalanta from RB Leipzig in August 2022, Lookman has scored 32 goals and provided 18 assists in 79 appearances across all competitions.
