Nigerian Federation reacts to claims Janne Andersson has been named as new Super Eagles coach
Published: August 20, 2024
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has dismissed recent reports suggesting that Swedish manager Janne Andersson is set to be appointed as the next head coach of the Super Eagles.
The Super Eagles have been without a permanent coach since Finidi George resigned following Nigeria's disappointing performance in the 2026 World Cup qualifying matches against South Africa's Bafana Bafana and Benin's Cheetahs.
During that campaign, Nigeria drew with South Africa at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo and suffered a loss to the Republic of Benin in Ivory Coast.
Rumours surfaced that Andersson was on the verge of being named the new Super Eagles coach ahead of Nigeria's 2025 AFCON qualifiers in September.
However, NFF spokesperson Ademola Olajire, in a conversation with allnigeriasoccer.com on Tuesday refuted these claims, asserting that no appointment has been made.
"The Federation will announce the Head Coach for Super Eagles when it's ready. Nobody has been appointed yet," Olajire clarified.
Nigeria is set to take on the Republic of Benin on September 7 at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, followed by a match against Rwanda three days later at the Amohoro Stadium as the international break resumes.
The Nigerian Federation has a history of appointing Swedish coaches, with Thomas Dennerby managing the Super Falcons at the 2019 Fifa Women's World Cup and 2018 CAF Women's Africa Cup of Nations, while Lars Lagerbäck was in the Super Eagles dugout during the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
