'A phenomenon' - Italian politician fears Atalanta will sell their standout player Lookman if a big offer arrives
Published: August 28, 2024
Italian politician and former journalist Vittorio Feltri has admitted that Europa League holders Atalanta will sell their standout player Ademola Lookman if they receive an offer too good to turn down.
Lookman won Atalanta's Player of the Season in back-to-back seasons after playing a key role for the Bergamo outfit in their win against Bayer Leverkusen in the final of the Europa League in May.
The Nigeria international went the distance against Real Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup but has not figured for the club in domestic matches this season, missing two matches in a row in the Serie A amid speculation surrounding his future.
There is a possibility that he would report for international duty next week lacking match fitness, given that he's rated as doubtful to make his return to action on Friday at Inter Milan as he's currently training away from the group.
French champions Paris Saint-Germain tested the waters regarding the signing of Lookman following the ankle injury suffered by Goncalo Ramos, but manager Luis Enrique opted not to sign a replacement forward.
In the event that the former Everton man is not sold before the close of the summer transfer window, Atalanta are planning to offer him a new deal that would see his wages increase.
In quotes relayed by Area Napoli, Feltri stated: "A phenomenon. Now I fear that they will take him away from us, because if a big offer arrives Atalanta will sell.
"This is also why the club has its accounts in order. I know the president Percassi, he is a very shrewd businessman, I don't think he will invest to aim for the Scudetto."
Lookman has registered 50 goal involvements in 79 all-competition appearances for Atalanta, whom he is contracted to until June 30, 2026.
