Algeria, England, Nigeria set to miss out as 22yo Bayern forward receives first senior call-up to France
Published: August 29, 2024The French Football Federation have made a concrete move to end once and for all speculation over the international future of Bayern Munich summer signing Michael Olise, allnigeriasoccer.com reports.
Olise has received his first call-up to France's senior national team and the forward will be part of manager Didier Deschamps' 23-man squad for the UEFA Nations League matches next month.
France will take on Italy on Friday, September 6 at the Parc des Princes in Paris then on Monday, September 9 face Belgium at the Groupama Stadium in Lyon-Décines.
Given that Olise is not an U21 player, the 22-year-old will become cap-tied to France with an appearance, even for one minute, against either Italy or Belgium.
Born in London, Olise is also eligible to represent his country of birth England as well as Nigeria and Algeria through his father and mother respectively but everything is pointing to the fact that the three associations are set to miss out on the outstanding winger, who is set to make his competitive debut for France's senior national team next month.
The Chelsea and Reading academy product previously represented France at U18, U21 and U23 levels.and became provisionally cap-tied to France on March 24, 2022 when he came off the bench in a European U21 Championship qualifier against Faroe Islands.
The Nigeria Football Federation made the first move to cap-tie the quad-national attacker at senior level by naming him on the roster for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Benin and Lesotho but he did not turn up for the games.
FIFA Council member Amaju Pinnick, an advocate of players with dual-eligibility, traveled to London to hold talks with Olise before the 2022 World Cup, but he declined having a meeting with the former Nigeria Football Federation boss.
The Bayern Munich star has received his first call-up to France's senior national team after starring at the 2024 Olympic Games, where he registered seven goal involvements (2 goals, 5 assists) in six matches.
