Jonas David: After a decade, Hamburg cut ties with central defender who has been scouted by Nigeria
Published: September 01, 2024With a statement on their official website, Hamburg have announced that Jonas David and the club have mutually agreed to go their separate ways with immediate effect.
David had stops at Meiendorfer SV and Eintracht Norderstedt before transferring to Hamburg in 2014.
The Nigeria Football Federation previously showed interest in David, with one of their representatives scouting him at a Hamburg training session.
David caught the attention of Paul Aigbogun prior to the 2019 FIFA U20 World Cup, with the ex-Flying Eagles coach making an attempt to include him in his squad for the tournament in Poland, though he was not successful.
Around the same time, former Nigeria manager Gernot Rohr, a respected figure in German football, contacted David to persuade him to switch to the Super Eagles, even though he was then playing for Germany U19s.
David has decided to leave Hamburg after a decade in search of a new challenge elsewhere.
He rose through the youth team ranks to make his professional debut for Hamburg at the age of eighteen on August 3, 2018,on the opening day of the 2018-2019 season against Holstein Kiel.
Overall, he played 59 games in all competitions for Hamburg and put his name on the scoresheet twice
David's first goal for die Rothosen was against 1. FC Nürnberg in the second round of the DFB-Pokal in 2021-2022, and his second goal for the club came in the derby against St. Pauli on 21st April 2023.
David enjoyed two loan spells as a Hamburg player, first with Würzburger Kickers from January to June 2020, followed by another with Hansa Rostock during the previous season.
