Attempted overhead kick: Ex-Bundesliga coach reckons Bayer Leverkusen star Boniface should have seen red
Published: September 01, 2024Former Bundesliga coach Armin Veh, who previously managed Eintracht Frankfurt, VfL Wolfsburg and VfB Stuttgart, believes Victor Boniface should have been sent off during Bayer Leverkusen's 3-2 loss to RB Leipzig on match day two of the German Bundesliga played at the BayArena on Saturday.
The Super Eagles forward didn't grab the headline for failing to find the back of the net, he stole attention for an incident that involved him and Leipzig's midfielder Amadou Haidara during the game.
In the 12th minute of the contest, the 2023/20224 Bundesliga Rookie of the Year attempted to score with an overhead kick but failed in his attempt with his boot hitting Haidara in the face.
Center referee Matthias Jollenbeck awarded him a yellow for the foul on the Mali international who was eventually replaced by Nico Siewald as he couldn't continue due to the incident.
The decision to award the 23-year-old caused controversy as some have opined that Jollenbeck should have given the Nigerian striker his marching orders rather than just caution him with a yellow card.
One of those who hold that opinion is former Augsburg manager Veh, who didn't hide his discontent with Boniface.
"If that happens in midfield, it's a red card, that's for sure. [...] I would have given a red card, his opponent had to be substituted afterward. Sure, he tried to score, but it was so close," he said on SPORT1.
Boniface could not prevent Bayer Leverkusen from losing in the Bundesliga for the first time in 35 matches and was replaced by Patrick Schick in the 77th minute.
