Wrexham goalkeeper Okonkwo keeps three clean sheet in a row for the second time in his pro career
Published: September 02, 2024
Arthur Okonkwo has picked up where he left off last season as he extended his streak without conceding to three games during Wrexham's 2-0 road win versus Peterborough United at Weston Homes Stadium on Saturday, allnigeriasoccer.com reports.
This is only the second time in his professional career the Hale End Academy graduate has managed to post three shutouts in consecutive matches.
He first achieved the feat with Crewe Alexandra during the 2022-2023 season, where he kept clean sheets in back-to-back matches with Leyton Orient (November 5), Colchester United (November 12) and Swindon Town (November 19).
Thanks to Okonkwo, the Red Dragons have not conceded in an away league match since John Akinde scored against them in the 54th minute at JobServe Community Stadium on April 6.
Wrexham signed the Nigerian glovesman on a permanent basis in June 2024 after his outstanding performances over the course of the 2023-2024 campaign, playing a key role as the club secured promotion to the third tier of English football.
He was named as the best goalkeeper in League Two by the English Football League in April 2024 after posting thirteen clean sheets in 34 league appearances.
With the exception of the 4-2 defeat to Sheffield United in the first round of the Carabao Cup, the Arsenal-reared goalkeeper has gone the distance in all the matches contested by Wrexham in the new season.
Having earned caps for England at U15, U16, U17, and U18 levels, Okonkwo is now on the radar of the Nigeria Football Federation ahead of a potential call-up to the Super Eagles.
