'We no dey carry last' - German-born GK Okoye proves his loyalty to Nigeria by backing Falconets to beat Germany
Published: September 04, 2024
Nigeria's Falconets face an uphill battle on Wednesday night when they take on Germany in their second group match of the ongoing 2024 Fifa U20 Women's World Cup.
Germany are the joint-most successful team in the history of the Fifa U20 Women's World Cup with three titles won, including two at the expense of Nigeria.
The Germans will be confident going into the match with Nigeria, giving their past successes against the Falconets.
While Nigeria opened group play with a hard-fought 1-0 win against South Korea, the Germans recorded a comfortable 5-2 victory versus Venezuela, thanks to goals from Steiner, Bender, Nachtigall and Zicai.
Ahead of tonight's showdown at Estadio de Techo, Bogotá, Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye has given the Falconets his complete backing despite his ties to Germany.
Born in Düsseldorf, Germany to a German mother and Nigerian father , the Udinese star opted to represent Nigeria internationally instead of European powerhouse Germany.
Few hours after reporting for international duty on Wednesday in Uyo, Okoye had a parley with the media, where he showed his support to the Falconets.
"We no dey carry last. Falconets all the best in the World Cup," Okoye told Dr. Victor Ademola, a Nigerian journalist.
Since making his international debut in a friendly against Brazil, former Fortuna Düsseldorf, Borussia Mönchengladbach and Bayer Leverkusen youth teamer Okoye has earned sixteen caps for the Super Eagles.
