Chelsea, Tottenham considered signing Super Eagles-eligible LB who scored 47 seconds into Denmark debut
Published: September 07, 2024
Lecce's Super Eagles-eligible left-back Patrick Dorgu attracted genuine interest from two London-based English Premier League clubs in the recently concluded transfer window.
The Copenhagen native had a sensational debut for Denmark on Thursday, scoring 47 seconds after coming off the bench to help the Scandinavians defeat Manuel Akanji's Switzerland 2-0 in a UEFA Nations League tie.
Although it was a competitive fixture, Dorgu still qualifies to represent the Super Eagles, as he is an U21 player and has not made more than three appearances for Denmark.
After an impressive 2023-2024 season, where he featured in 34 matches for Lecce's first team, the 19-year-old earned a first-ever call-up to Denmark's senior national team for the internationals in September and played the last nine minutes of the encounter against the Swiss.
Dorgu's impressive performances at Lecce have not gone unnoticed, with top Premier League teams monitoring the fullback's situation.
According to transfer market guru Fabrizio Romano, Tottenham Hotspur had Dorgu on their transfer shortlist in the summer window and Chelsea also considered signing him in July but a deal did not materialize.
The €30-35 million price tag placed by Lecce for the young talent discouraged the London clubs, and discussions never reached an advanced stage.
Dorgu joined Lecce from Nordsjælland youth academy in the summer of 2022 and has a contract with the Giallorossi until June 2027.
