Official: Super Falcons striker Ifeoma Onumonu completes historic transfer to Montpellier HSC
Published: September 09, 2024
With a statement on their official website, French Première Ligue club Montpellier HSC have announced the signing of Super Falcons striker Ifeoma Onumonu.
Montpellier HSC have confirmed that Onumonu has become the first Nigerian player in the history of Montpellier Hérault Sport Club Féminines.
National Women's Soccer League club Utah Royals mutually parted ways with the 2024 Olympian, paving the way for her to join Montpellier HSC as a free agent.
With a youthful attacking lineup featuring Esther Mbakem Niaro (22), Nina Ngueleu (20), Lola Gstalter (19) and Elisa Rambaud (18), Montpellier HSC needed an experienced forward and have signed the 30-year-old Onumonu.
Born in California, United States, Onumonu was traded to Utah Royals in December 2023 from NY/NJ Gotham FC.
She managed only five appearances for Utah Royals due to an ankle injury and frequent call-ups to the Nigeria Women's National Team.
In July 2024, she was moved to Nigeria's 18-player roster for the 2024 Olympic Games as a replacement for the injured midfielder Halimatu Ayinde.
During the competition in France, she logged 54 minutes in total, coming off the bench for the last 24 minutes against Brazil before playing for half an hour versus world champions Spain.
For the 2024-2025 season, Onumonu has been assigned the number 11 shirt at Montpellier HSC.
