Lookman speaks on being one of the stars in Super Eagles, pressure and responsibility playing for Nigeria
Published: September 10, 2024Ademola Lookman has opened up about the pressures and responsibilities associated with representing Nigeria on the international stage.
The 26-year-old also shared his feelings about being regarded as one of the standout players in the Super Eagles.
Since making his debut for Nigeria in 2022, Lookman has risen to prominence as a key player due to his impressive performances.
The Atalanta winger has earned 25 caps for Nigeria and scored 8 goals, including three during the 2023 AFCON tournament, where he was a joint top scorer for the team.
Reflecting on the pressures of playing for Nigeria, Lookman acknowledged the intense expectations that come with the role.
"The pressure and responsibility comes with every time you get called up to play for the country," he told Counter Attack Podcast,
"Our country lives and breathes football. If you go on the street you see so many people wearing different football teams shirts.
"It's about football so that responsibility is always there and obviously now I have been here coming up to three years now and obviously your responsibility is a lot higher than when I first came in.
"I take that with stride, I take that with so much confidence because I am blessed to be here, blessed to have this responsibility and I wouldn't change it.”
Lookman, a standout performer for Nigeria, described the increased expectations as a welcome challenge.
He embraced the demands of his role and expressed a strong desire to continue improving and securing victories for the nation.
"It's a good thing because obviously it comes with my football, my performances. I take that as a compliment, obviously look to win games and show what I can do within the team, within the circumstances."
