'He's going to struggle to find space' - Maresca on Chukwuemeka's situation at Chelsea
Published: September 13, 2024
Speaking in his post-match conference ahead of Chelsea's Premier League clash with Bournemouth, Enzo Maresca has revealed the situation with the future of Carney Chukwuemeka.
The Anglo-Nigerian midfielder is yet to play a single minute for the Blues this season and has not been included in the matchday squad as well.
This comes as no surprise as Maresca had already hinted that the England youth international will have to leave Stamford Bridge if he is to get ample game time this season.
The Italian tactician has a good number of players that can play the number 10 role, which is Chukwuemeka's natural position, thereby making it difficult for him to get a look-in.
He was linked with Crystal Palace, AC Milan and Barcelona before the closure of the transfer window, but none could get him a move away from West London.
The 20-year-old has been linked with Galatasaray recently but transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has dismissed the report, leaving him with little or no chance of getting game time elsewhere.
With the talented midfielder left with no option, Maresca was quizzed about his situation ahead of the Blues' meeting with Bournemouth.
In quotes relayed by Football.London, the 44-year-old said: "I said already to him personally, and to you in the press conference: I really, really like Carney.
"The problem is that we have so many attacking midfielders that he is going to struggle to find space.
"Because of his past, in terms of injuries, the best thing to do was to go and prove himself that he is fit and can play 30 or 35 games and then come back here.
"Unfortunately we didn't find any solutions and now he is one of the players in our squad and we can use him."
Chukwuemeka has been included in Chelsea's squad for the Europa Conference League, which is an indication that he could get minutes in Cup competitions.
