'Was he very good today?' - Fenerbahce chief aims dig at Osimhen despite assist in Intercontinental Derby
Published: September 22, 2024Fenerbahçe Vice President Acun Ilıcalı has played down the performance of Victor Osimhen for Galatasaray in the Intercontinental Derby played yesterday at the Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium.
This stems from the criticism received by Fenerbahçe striker Youssef En-Nesyri after the game with the Morocco international registering one goal since the start of the season
Galatasaray came out on top beating Fenerbahçe 3-1 with Osimhen not being on the scoresheet but registered an assist in the game.
After an own goal from Dominik Livaković gave the Lion the lead, the Super Eagles striker helped give his side a two-goal cushion, chesting the ball incredibly towards Dries Mertens who tucked it home.
Despite his goal involvement, Ilıcalı felt the 2015 Fifa U17 World Cup winner didn't play well in the game, in response to the criticism En-Nesyri received for his performance
In quotes relayed by TRTSPOR, he remarked: "A football player may not play very well. What do you attribute Osimhen to? Was he very good today?
"En-Nesyri couldn't play either. Forwards can't find a position in such derbies anyway."
"There's no need to go into individual things. Of course, I don't claim that he played very well. It would be very rude to say something.
"Instead of talking about daily talk, our belief is always about the future. I am very optimistic."
Osimhen has now registered two assists in his first two games for Galatasaray but is still searching for his first goal.
The 25-year-old could get the chance to score his first goal for the Turkish giants on Thursday when they face PAOK on matchday one of the UEFA Europa League at the RAMS Park.
