Boniface scores in 93rd minute as master of late goals Leverkusen edge 7-goal thriller v Wolfsburg
Published: September 22, 2024
Victor Boniface scored for the second consecutive Bundesliga game for Bayer Leverkusen, netting a stoppage time winner in their 4-3 win over VfL Wolfsburg in the BayArena on Sunday afternoon.
Since manager Xabi Alonso's arrival in October 2022, Bayer Leverkusen have gained a reputation for their knack of scoring late, with 42 goals coming after the 80th minute in tight games.
The Black and Reds went a goal down in the 5th minute, as fullback Nordi Mukiele put the ball into his net before Florian Wirtz bagged the equalizer for the defending champions in the 14t minute.
Jonathan Tah put the home side ahead in the 32nd header with a perfect header from Alex Grimaldo's corner-kick but their lead only lasted for a few minutes as Sebastiaan Bornauw restored parity for the Wolfsburg.
A minute into the half stoppage time, Mattias Svanberg gave the White and Greens the lead to put an end to an electric first half.
Four minutes after the restart, Piero Hincapie put Xabi Alonso's side back on level terms for the second time in the game, heading Alex Garcia's cross into the net.
In a bid to get the winning goal, Alonso brought on Boniface for Patrik Schick in the 68th minute and it wasn't long before the Nigerian striker made his first impact in the game.
The 23-year-old received a pass in the penalty area and did well to control the ball before striking a shot towards goal but was denied by Wolfsburg goalkeeper Kamil Grabara.
Two minutes before the stoppage time, Wolfsburg were reduced to 10 men as Yannick Gerhardt got sent off which made the task of getting the winning goal less difficult for Bayern Leverkusen.
Three minutes into the additional time, Boniface pounced on a loose ball and struck the ball perfectly into the bottom corner to hand the home side the maximum points.
It has been a brilliant week for the 23-year-old, who grabbed the headline for pulling off a fantastic skill in Bayer Leverkusen's win over Feyenoord in the UEFA Champions League and has now done the same by getting the winner for his side in the Bundesliga.
