Done deal: Burnley sign Man Utd-reared defender Balogun who can play in five positions
Published: September 24, 2024
With a statement on the official website, Burnley have announced the signing of versatile Manchester United-reared defender Hamzat Balogun following a successful trial.
Balogun impressed during the trial and helped the young Clarets’ secure victory over Bristol City in the Professional Development League earlier in September.
The 19-year-old, who can play in five different positions, signed a contract until summer 2025 and will join the U21 squad.
His arrival is expected to enhance the team's quality as they aim for the top position in the Professional Development League.
Balogun is predominantly a right-back, but can also fill roles at left-back, midfield, and both flanks.
He expressed enthusiasm about joining the team, saying, "I feel happy and I can’t wait to get going. My aim is to work my way into the team and play as much as possible. I’ve not had much game time in the past few months, so I’ll need to put in a foundation to build off."
He praised the team's style of play, particularly how they integrate full-backs into their attacking strategies.
"The team play good football and I like the patterns of play. In my position they like to get the full backs involved as well.
”It’s a good bunch of lads and I get on well with them."
Balogun began his football journey at Manchester United, progressing from their pre-academy level to the U16s before signing a scholarship with Watford.
Although he secured his first professional contract with the Hornets last summer, he found himself without a club until joining Burnley.
With this new opportunity, Balogun aims to revitalize his career and potentially attract bigger teams in the future.
