Dessers or Igamane: Ex-Tottenham defender gives verdict on who should be Rangers first-choice striker
Published: October 01, 2024Former Tottenham Hotspur right-back Alan Hutton has given his verdict on who should be Rangers first choice striker between Cyriel Dessers and Hamza Igamane.
Dessers did not totally convince in his first season at Ibrox, and that informed the decision to get another striker last summer, and the Light Blues settled for Igamane, who arrived from AS FAR.
However, the Super Eagles striker has enjoyed a blistering start to the season which has restricted the game time of the Morocco youth international to just one start across all competitions.
Phillipe Clement handed the young Moroccan striker his first start in Rangers’ Scottish Premiership home fixture with Hibernian last weekend but he failed to make an impression and was replaced by Dessers in the 56th minute.
Speaking with the Scottish Football Social Club via Ibrox news, Hutton wasn't impressed with Igamane's performance against Hibernian and stated that Dessers should continue to be the first-choice striker.
"I was looking forward to seeing him start a game after the Dundee United cameo," he said.
"I thought he looked impressive so I was looking forward to seeing what he would give you on a start, especially at Ibrox.”
"I thought he was all over the place instead of just being that focal point, being that number nine that Dessers can be and then working from there.
"I don’t know if he was desperate to get on the ball to make something happen, but he was coming short, going wide and leaving that big area up top with very rarely anyone in it.
"There is a player there and I think it is going to take him time to settle, get used to everything. But at this moment in time, Dessers is the number one choice for me and I think he showed that when he came on as well."
The Nigeria international has only failed to start two games across all competitions in the new season and has been in stellar form, scoring seven goals in 11 games.
With the 29-year-old's form, he will continue to be Clement's first choice unless Igamane can outshine him.
