Leverkusen coach sees Drogba-like qualities in Boniface but insists he needs to be more aggressive
Published: October 02, 2024
Speaking at the post-match press conference after his side's 1-0 win over AC Milan in the UEFA Champions League, Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso has highlighted the similarities between Victor Boniface and Didier Drogba's qualities.
This comparison came after Boniface scored the decisive goal in Leverkusen's 1-0 triumph over AC Milan at the BayArena on Tuesday night.
Boniface netted the only goal of the match in the 51st minute, capitalizing on a rebound from Jeremie Frimpong's shot that was parried by Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan.
This goal marks Boniface's first in the tournament during just his second appearance.
Reacting to a question from German-based Nigerian journalist, Oma Akatugba, Alonso emphasized the similarities in qualities between Boniface and Drogba.
Alonso highlighted Boniface's strength and ability to challenge defenders, drawing direct parallels to Drogba.
"He has many qualities that can make him as strong as Drogba," Alonso remarked. "That he's so powerful and can create so many problems."
However, Alonso emphasized the need for Boniface to recognize and develop his own unique strengths.
"But, as well, he needs to know his own qualities. He is great in short spaces and likes to be around the box." Alonso noted,
The former Liverpool midfielder added that Boniface must be more aggressive in attacking the area.
"Sometime he needs to be aggressive to attack the box," he added.
Alonso also expressed his commitment to helping the young striker develop and improve his decision-making.
"It is a process, we need to help him, we need to push him, and sometimes to take better decisions."
Since joining from Union Saint-Gilloise last summer, Boniface has made a strong impression.
The Nigerian striker had an outstanding debut season, netting 21 goals and providing 10 assists across all competitions.
He has continued that form into the current campaign, scoring 5 goals and registering 1 assist in 8 games.
With Boniface's growing influence in the squad, football fans will be eager to see how he continues to develop under Alonso's guidance.
