'I've played under him' - Ex-Flying Eagles star backs Eguavoen to deliver despite Osimhen's absence
Published: October 06, 2024
Former Flying Eagles goalkeeper Kola Ige has expressed his thoughts on the notable absence of Victor Osimhen from Nigeria's squad for the upcoming double-header against Libya in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The matches are set to take place at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on Friday, October 11, before the team travels to Benghazi for the return fixture on Tuesday, October 15.
Interim manager Austin Eguavoen has named a 23-man squad, which includes three goalkeepers, seven defenders, six midfielders, and seven strikers.
Among the selected players are Ademola Lookman, William Troost-Ekong, Alex Iwobi, and the returning Chidera Ejuke.
However, Osimhen and Olisa Ndah have been sidelined due to injuries, leaving a significant gap in the team.
In an interview with allnigeriasoccer.com, Ige acknowledged the impact of Osimhen's absence but expressed confidence in Eguavoen's ability to adapt the team's tactics.
"Eguavoen is a team player, I have played under him before, he is a very good coach," Ige stated.
"He knows how to put the boys together. He has been doing that for long he is not a novice. Of course there would a little bit changes and he knows everything, he has experience."
Ige emphasized the importance of commitment from the players called up for the crucial matches, stating, "Any player invited to this game as to give more than 100 percent because every player wants to be at the Nations Cup."
"Yes football is all about money but sometimes you have to count how many things you have done for your club and country.
"So if they are rating you too it will be among things they will rate you with."
As the team prepares for both matches, all eyes will be on the players and the technical staff to see how they adjust to the absence of Osimhen.
