Nigerian Federation tells Chelsea star Tosin he knows what to do if he wants to play for Super Eagles
Published: October 07, 2024
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has stated that Tosin Adarabioyo is aware of the steps he needs to take to represent Nigeria.
Tosin Adarabioyo's transfer from Fulham to Chelsea this summer has sparked heightened interest in his international career, with particular focus on whether he might choose to represent Nigeria.
Despite reports from local media indicating that the Chelsea central defender is eager to play for the Super Eagles, allnigeriasoccer.com earlier reported that he has not been contacted to clarify his international future.
Austin Eguavoen, the interim manager, had unveiled the squad that will represent Nigeria in the upcoming AFCON qualifier matches against Libya.
The first match will take place in Uyo on October 11, followed by a return leg in Benghazi on October 15.
Eguavoen called up seven defenders for the upcoming AFCON qualifier matches against Libya, including William Troost-Ekong, Calvin Bassey, Semi Ajayi, among others.
However, notably absent from the squad is Tosin, who is eligible to play for Nigeria despite having previously represented England at youth levels.
The absence of Tosin from the squad for the upcoming AFCON qualifier matches against Libya sparked debate, given his skills and the relatively advanced age of Nigerian center backs.
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Football Federation has provided an updated on his chances of representing Nigeria.
The Nigeria Football Federation disclosed there have been discussions with Tosin in the past and he indicated that he was not ready to play for Nigeria at that time.
The NFF further suggested that Adarabioyo is aware of what he needs to do to switch his international allegiance to Nigeria.
"Jose Peseiro travelled to meet with him in the UK last year to speak to him about playing for Nigeria, but he told the coach at that time that he was not ready," an NFF source told ESPN.
"If he wants to make the switch now he knows what to do."
London-born Tosin has not figured for England's national teams for close to nine years, with his last appearance for the Young Lions coming against Japan youth team on November 15, 2015.
