Bayer Leverkusen coach reveals two conditions for Boniface's inclusion in travelling squad to Bremen
Published: October 25, 2024
Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso has revealed the two conditions required for Victor Boniface to join the squad traveling to face Werder Bremen at Weserstadion on Saturday.
The Bundesliga defending champions head into the game with uncertainty surrounding the fitness of their star striker, who was involved in an accident after last weekend's victory over Eintracht Frankfurt.
He was omitted from the travelling squad to face Brest in the UEFA Champions League game that took place on Wednesday, and German-Nigerian midfielder Francis Onyeka was named as his replacement.
Boniface hasn't missed any Bundesliga game this season but now risks being absent for the first time if he is certified unfit for the trip to Bremen.
Speaking in his pre-match conference, Alonso revealed that Boniface must be physically and mentally ready to be named in the travelling squad.
In quotes relayed by Liga Insider, the 2023/2024 Bundesliga Coach of the Year said: "If he feels good.
"Today is the last test in (final) training. If he feels good, both physically and mentally, he will travel to Bremen."
Boniface scored in the 5-0 thumping of Bremen at the BayArena last season but didn't score in the reverse fixture, which Bayer Leverkusen won by 3-0.
Alonso will be hoping that the 23-year-old is fit to face Werder Bremen to boost the chances of his side getting the maximum points and help them close the gap on table-toppers Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig.
