Botched 2025 Afconq: CAF awards three points and three goals to Nigeria; Libya fined N82.3m
Published: October 26, 2024
The Confederation of African Football has given its verdict on the botched Africa Cup of Nations qualification game between Nigeria and Libya.
The game couldn't take place as the Super Eagles decided to opt out as they were handed rough treatment by the Libyan authorities, making it difficult for them to prepare for the game.
According to the statement released by CAF, the Libya Football Federation have been found culpable of breaching Article 31 of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Regulations.
They were also deemed to have violated Articles 82 and 151 of the CAF Disciplinary Code, which culminated in the match being declared lost by Libya by a score of 3-0.
The Libya Football Federation have also been ordered to pay a fine of $50,000 (approximately N83 million in Nigerian currency) within 60 days of being intimated by the decision.
The decision means the Super Eagles have now accrued 10 points from four games played, which places them atop of their group, four points more than second-placed Benin.
The three-time Africa champions will seal their qualification if they beat Benin next month at the Stade Félix Houphouët Boigny.
A win against the Cheetahs will place them on 13 points, which will be an unassailable lead over other teams in the group with a game to spare.
