WAFU B U20 Championship: Five takeaways from Flying Eagles 3-1 victory against Niger
Published: October 27, 2024
Nigeria clinched a spot in the 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations following a 3-1 triumph over Niger at Kegue Stadium.
In the second semifinal of the WAFU Zone B tournament in Lome, Togo, the Flying Eagles took an early hit when Niger scored in the ninth minute with a shot from outside the box that caught goalkeeper Harcourt off guard.
However, Nigeria equalized with a brilliant finish from Enyimba's Clinton Jephta in the 35th minute and put Nigeria ahead with another goal in the 58th minute.
With this victory, Nigeria advanced to the tournament final, where they will face Ghana, who defeated Ivory Coast earlier.
Allnigeriasoccer.com presents five observations from the game
Coach Aliyu Zubairu Makes a Tactical Change
Coach Zubairu made one change to the lineup that had previously beaten Ivory Coast in the group stage.
El Kanemi Warriors star Suleyman Alabi replaced the injured Sabiu Ibrahim in midfield.
Nigeria Shows Improved Performance
After a shaky start in the tournament, where they lost to Burkina Faso and had to rally to beat Ivory Coast, the Flying Eagles showcased a much-improved performance against Niger.
They dominated the match with superior coordination, passing, and movement.
Niger Employs a Physical Strategy
Niger initially surprised Nigeria by taking an early lead in the ninth minute.
They adopted a physical and compact approach in hopes of overpowering Nigeria.
This strategy initially hindered Nigeria's ability to make decisive plays in the attack.
However, with patience and control, the Flying Eagles found their rhythm, scoring two goals to secure the win.
Clinton Jephta Shines in Attack
Clinton Jephta was instrumental in Nigeria's success, effectively breaking through the tough and organized Niger defense.
His movement and ability to find space made it challenging for the defenders, while his intelligence in tight situations and skillful shooting from outside the box allowed Nigeria to bounce back after conceding an early goal.
Niger Goes Direct in Search of an Equalizer
As the match drew to a close, Niger opted for a more direct approach in their bid to level the score.
Leveraging their physicality and height, they aimed several balls into the box, putting pressure on the Nigerian defense.
However, Nigeria’s backline effectively handled the onslaught, with captain Bameyi playing a crucial role.
He made several key clearances and expertly organized the defense to prevent any late drama, ensuring Nigeria secured the victory.
